But where there is life, there can also be crawling, flying, or nesting creatures. Pests on indoor plants may sound like a flaw at first. In reality, there is often much more to it than that: legal regulations, supply chains within Europe, and seasonal fluctuations. For us at Hydroplant, one thing is clear: we want to supply plants that are not only beautiful, but also healthy. And we want to do so with a clear conscience. That’s why we rely on expertise, control, and natural helpers.
What used to be a quick fix with a spray is now much more challenging. And rightly so: more and more chemical agents are coming under criticism because they pollute groundwater, endanger biodiversity, or have long-term consequences for the environment. The Federal Council and the EU are constantly tightening the requirements for plant protection products. This affects not only agriculture, but also the care of ornamental and indoor plants. For companies like Hydroplant, this means that we have to take an even closer look, work more carefully, and find new ways to protect plants reliably.
We regularly implement preventive plant protection measures in our own nursery. Naturally, we always do so in accordance with applicable environmental standards. We carefully select our suppliers, ensure that young plants are healthy, maintain clean supply chains, and choose robust species that are suitable for the location. A balanced supply of nutrients and water also plays a key role, as healthy plants are more resistant to pests and diseases.
Nevertheless, seasonal influences can never be completely ruled out: depending on the temperature, humidity, or light conditions, pests can be brought in from outside—even into the best-maintained indoor spaces. That is why our experts check all plants before delivery and also implement targeted preventive measures as part of our service. Because prevention is better than cure.
Healthy plants enliven the indoor climate, concentration, and well-being.
If a pest infestation does occur, we at Hydroplant rely on natural predators wherever possible: so-called beneficial insects. These include tiny predatory mites, parasitic wasps, and ladybug larvae. Some beneficial insects actively hunt. As predators, they eat the pests directly. Others, such as parasitic wasps, are parasites: they lay their eggs in or on the pests, and the larvae then take care of the rest. It sounds brutal, but it’s amazingly efficient.
Many of these helpers are highly specialized and only act against certain pests. This makes them particularly effective and at the same time harmless to plants, humans, and pets. They are so tiny that they are barely visible to the naked eye. They do not sting, fly at anyone, or attack your furnishings.
On the contrary: as soon as there are no more pests, the beneficial insects die off on their own, even though they could theoretically continue to live. Interesting to know: predatory mites live for about 20 to 35 days, parasitic wasps only 5 to 10 days, and ladybug larvae about 2 to 3 weeks. After that, there is peace and quiet. No residues, no chemicals, but with a big effect.
If you notice any unusual changes in a plant, you should take a closer look. Sticky residues, fine webs, or crippled leaves, for example, can be problematic. In most cases, it’s no big deal, but it’s an indication that some help would be welcome. Location factors such as too little light, dry heated air, or a lack of air circulation can also encourage pests.
When the greenery thrives, it has a positive effect on the room.
