Vertical greening with the Fytotextile® system
What happens when expertise in flora and fauna comes together at Zurich Zoo? A lush plant wall that comes to life in the entrance area of the Exotarium research station. And a species-rich, exotic experience for us at Hydroplant.
The soundscape at Zurich Zoo is rich. But amid the birds, amphibians, reptiles, and penguin parades, there is also a lot of research going on. At the research station, zoo visitors can experience university research right in the middle of the zoo and gain exciting insights into the specialized breeding of endangered frogs, fish, reptiles, and insects. The various rooms have climatic conditions that mimic the animals’ natural habitats – from cool to hot, from dry to humid. The aim is to promote the successful reproduction of endangered species and contribute to the long-term protection of these animals.
As part of the renovation of this research station, Hydroplant has created lush greenery in the entrance area. “Since we have only recently started using the Fytotextile® system indoors, this project is a great pilot. It shows that the system works perfectly not only outdoors but also indoors,” explains project manager Corinne Prunner.
The climate is palpable, and exotic plants thrive in this location.
Together with the architectural firm L3P Architekten AG, Hydroplant has developed a concept that is carefully tailored to the local conditions. The plant wall adorns the entrance area of the research station—between the Pantanal aviary and the Ornis Center for Species Conservation, directly opposite an aviary. This allowed many exotic plants to be placed at the entrance to the exotic animals, creating a species-rich atmosphere. The idea: the various plants are reminiscent of the animals’ natural habitats. They serve as a guide and an invitation to visitors to immerse themselves in the different animal worlds. Another key aspect was that the greenery blends harmoniously into the surroundings and creates specific accents through the use of special plant species.
Lush, bushy, dense – the greening concept for Zurich Zoo.
One by one: each plant finds its place.
The green wall looks like it has grown wild, but appearances can be deceiving: all of the plants are planted in special pockets containing mineral substrate and are systematically watered. The selected plants are highly adaptable to damp, shady environments and thrive in conditions similar to those found in tropical rainforests. Each plant has striking or unique characteristics – a green symbol of biodiversity at the research center. Thanks to the zoo’s expertise, Hydroplant was also able to work with unusual plant species such as various orchids. Corinne Prunner is delighted: «The ideal location and expert care meant that the first orchids were in full bloom after just a short time.»
Passionate about bringing more greenery to everyday life at the zoo – the Hydroplant project team.
